2 Day Weekend Beginners Course – Silhouette Pendant or Earrings

2 Day Jewellery making course for beginners, 10 – 4 pm

This course is a new 2-day introduction to some basic jewellery making techniques aimed at beginners. The focus this time is on saw piercing and sweat soldering using sheet metal (not wire) to make a silhouette pendant or earrings, and we will cover some basic skills to get you started. –

    Course Breakdown –

Day 1 – In the morning we will start with practicing some texturing techniques on sheet metal such as hammers to texture, punches to add a design or the rolling mill to emboss with texture. This will be followed by some saw piecing practice, cutting some shapes in copper using a jewellers saw. In the afternoon, we will continue with saw piercing and introduce some sweat soldering techniques to attach some of your cut-out shapes together, layering them to make a mock-up design in copper ready for day 2.

Day 2 – We will utilise all the skills covered on day 1 to make a silver silhouette pendant, or you could choose to make some earrings instead. You will be provided with a small sheet of sterling silver to do this so depending on the design you choose, you may get more than one pendant, or 2 pairs of earrings etc. This is very much dependent on the design and size you choose.

Skills covered during the 2-day course will be – texturing metal, saw piercing (cutting using a jewellery saw), filing and sanding, soldering and polishing. We will also discuss some additional information such as hallmarking requirements if you wish to make jewellery to sell. I can also provide a suppliers list for materials and tools etc.

Time permitting you may get to make a simple ring from silver, but this is very much dependent on time and is not guaranteed. There will be a small charge for silver wire if this project goes ahead.

    Jesmonite Workshop

Jesmonite jewellery, coasters and pots. During this workshop, you will learn how to create items from Jesmonite. JESMONITE is a non-toxic, water-based 2 part resin system that dries to an opaque stone like finish. It is a great versatile material to work with and during this workshop you will learn how to create jewellery and other items by adding coloured pigments, using marbling techniques, adding foil and creating 2 tone effects. I have a wide variety of moulds to create jewellery items, coasters/trinket trays, trinket boxes and small plant pot/tea light holders. There is no limit on the amount of items you create, so you can make just jewellery or a combination of items.

Jesmonite hardens in about 30 mins, so items can be removed from the mould at this point, however 24hrs is needed for items to fully cure. You can take your items home with you at the end of the session, but I would recommend leaving for the full 24hrs before assembling into jewellery. For this reason, students will be responsible for providing their own findings. (I can provide a little silver plated findings so that some pieces can be finished during the session).
