Learning to Throw Pots

£75.00

We are lucky enough to be able to welcome you to our indoor/outdoor covered barn area, which makes a great studio during this challenging period. The pottery wheels are spaced in accordance with the government guidelines so that different households can come and be comfortable whilst enjoying their pottery experience.

This course is designed for those who would just like to try their hand at throwing or have had some previous experience here (perhaps having attended the 2-hour taster session) and would like a little more time to hone in on their skills.

It is also designed with small groups in mind, with the emphasis on as much 1 to 1 tuition as possible and achieving successful and satisfying results. Interestingly, during this 3 hour course our novice, student potters produce some stunning results (see gallery).

Individuals are very welcome to book for themselves or friends in advance. Between four and 6 people can be accommodated at one time.

These sessions make great birthday treats, anniversary surprises, Christmas presents, hen or stag get togethers, or just a great experience. Sessions can be booked A.M or P.M.

Please note, I am not a ‘hobby’ potter, but a professional.

  • Raku firing
    In-Person Course

Raku Courses (Ancient Japanese glaze firing)

Raku is the ancient Japanese art of rapid glaze firing. You will learn how to achieve the most amazing and unique glaze patterns on your ceramic objects, pots and bowls etc, using this unusual technique. Unlike conventional firing techniques, Raku pulls ceramic objects from the kiln at temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees centigrade. The pots are then immediately placed in combustible materials before being dramatically plunged into water to freeze the interesting surface designs that are created by this method. You will be blown away by the fabulous effects that you can achieve. It is the unpredictability of the outcomes that make Raku so appealing and engaging.

We usually have 6 people on our course and the whole experience is friendly, intimate and very uplifting. Richard is an expert in the mysterious art of Raku, and he has taught thousands of people over the years, so you are learning from a master potter and specialist. On the day, you will see Richard in action, demonstrating the art, and then you will learn these techniques through hands-on experience.
