This is an introduction to the sewing machine teaching you all the basic skills and what the buttons are for! This workshop is for you if you have never used a sewing machine before, or if you are feeling like you need a refresher. There’s a lot you will learn, making sure you will leave with the confidence to try your own beginners projects at home!  We will spend the morning learning techniques and making a few small items. In the afternoon you can choose a project, either a tote bag or envelope cushion using the skills you have learnt. Fabrics are provided.

Class sizes are kept small making sure that everyone gets attention and assistance when needed.

Course Details :-

This class covers:

  • The parts of a sewing machine
  • Threading your machine
  • Winding a bobbin
  • Stitch selection
  • How to change stitch length, (and width if your machine has this facility)
  • How to adjust tension
  • Presser feet, how to change them
  • How to sew a straight line and turn corners
  • How to sew a buttonhole
  • Cutting fabric from a template
  • Neatening seams
  • Making a pocket
During the lesson, you can choose to make either a Tote Bag with pocket or an Envelope Cushion Cover, utilising you newly learnt skills.  Fabric will be provided. You will need to bring:
  • Your sewing machine (in good working order with instruction manual and any accessories that came with the machine)
  • A small sewing kit, including scissors (small and large if possible), pins, thread, unpicker, tape measure, fabric marker pen
  • Packed lunch (and your own drinks if you prefer)

    Roman Blind and Piped Cushion Workshop

    If you’ve ever wanted to make your own home furnishings then this is a great place to start. In this 1 day workshop you will make a sample size Roman blind and a Piped cushion!! You will leave with your makes and full instructions as a reference for when you make lots more at home.

    In this workshop we will discuss how to measure and calculate your blind size and fabric requirements.
    You will be shown two ways which can be used to attach your blind to your window and how the mechanism works for you to wind the blind up and down.
    You will then cut out and make a small, machine sewn, lined sample blind to a professional standard.
    You will have your sample blind to keep, hardware will not be provided, (if you wish to have a track and rods to take home there will be an extra £19 charge, all other materials are included – please let me know in advance as they have to be ordered).
    Basic sewing skills required, you need to know how to thread a machine and sew a straight line.
