Plan of the Day: You will be welcomed to this Sussex Garden School fused glass workshop, in a stunning venue in the heart of the South Downs with refreshments, before Jazz starts the day with a short introduction to glass fusing. Having drawn inspiration from the beautiful surroundings the course is held in, you will move on to working on drawing out your ideas from which you will create your design. The kiln carving process uses a compressed fibre into which the design is cut using a scalpel and a variety of other tools. By layering up the fibre and creating different levels, it is possible to create a 3D effect. Jazz will advise and guide you throughout the process to enable you to create your unique piece. You will have a choice of coloured iridescent glass to use, and once you have created your design in the fibre, you will also have the choice of how your finished piece is presented. It could be framed in a deep square frame, shaped into a shallow square platter, or curved to create a freestanding panel. As well as your main piece, there will also be the opportunity to create a hanging suncatcher, using the same design techniques. At the end of the course day, Jazz will take your pieces away to be fired, and your finished work will be and returned via the post in approx. 3 weeks. Tutor: Jazz graduated as a BA Hons Designer Maker from the University of Brighton, specialising in glass. For many years she taught design and crafts to children, and now she teaches glass techniques to adults. She has a reputation for patience and intimate knowledge of glass as material and a variety of techniques for crafting it. Subjects Covered: An explanation of the art of fusing glass; An exploration of different ideas & inspiration to spark your own imagination; Understanding the process of kiln carving; Understanding how to choose glass to create beautiful glass reliefs. By the end of the day, you will have: Explored the garden and selected material to help create your design; Learnt about fused glass, relief design, and the use of fibre to create a 3d effect; Had fun creating your own unique designs; Created two fibre moulds into which your choice of glass will be fused to create your glass pieces; Created the designs for a glass relief panel or a shallow platter and glass hanger; Enjoyed a tasty lunch and creative company. You will make for yourself: A beautiful iridescent glass relief panel and a suncatcher Who is the course for? No experience necessary, Jazz will guide and support you throughout the day.
