1 Day Kitchen Knife Making Course – 19th April 2024

This day course will introduce you to the basics of blacksmithing and hand forge work with Jacek Robótka of Jorgen Craft. This is one day class concentrating on the particular techniques of forging a small kitchen knife. The blade shape will be based on Viking era knife find from Birka, grave Bj 903.

Starting with fire control and hand hammer work, you will learn carbon steel forging. We will forge the blade and then tang, we then work the edge down to a thin section and forge the blade bevel. You will then heat treat your blades in 3 processes (normalising, hardening and tempering). You will then clean up the blades on a grinder so that they are ready for you to fit to a pre-made handle, and then finally sharpen and strop to a razor’s edge.

No prior experience is needed, and the class will guide you through:

    Forge safety

Using a gas forge hammer and anvil

    Forging the blade to shape

    Forging the blade bevel

    Forging the tang

Heat treating, normalising hardening and tempering

    Burning on the handle

Blade finishing, sharpening, stropping and edge testing

The course is open to all aged 18+ who can swing a hammer…(or younger accompanied by a parent), please get in touch with any specific requirements.

At the end of the day, you will go home with a fully finished and sharp knife that you have made yourself suitable for a lifetime of use in your kitchen.

    Pebble Mosaic Workshop

For many years, I have run one day pebble mosaic workshops from my working studio in central Ilkley.

This workshop is unique in that it has been designed to fit comfortably into one day, covering the history and practicalities of mosaic, giving advice, as well as creating your own mosaic through to casting it, which can then be collected once it has cured.

The workshop usually runs on Saturdays from 10 until 6pm, so if you are staying for a few days, the cured mosaic can be picked up on Monday before you travel home, or it can be picked up at a later date.

People find the workshops not only informative, but relaxing, therapeutic, and good for their wellbeing.

The workshops give me the opportunity to share the knowledge I have built up over many years on commission work and give people practical advice to help them with their specific projects, whether that is in pebble or other types of mosaic.

Numbers are kept to a maximum of 4 people to make sure that everyone gets the best from the day, and my wife Caroline who is a designer and mosaicist provides support throughout the day.
