    How to Sew a Roman Blind

    HOW TO SEW A ROMAN BLIND

    Roman blinds are a great way of dressing a window, giving a simple, unfussy look. Whether you choose a patterned or plain fabric, you can make a feature of your windows without the expense of curtains.

    The aim of this class is to demonstrate all the techniques and stitches required to make a lined and interlined roman blind using your sewing machine and also sewing by hand to create a professional looking finish. You will create a 1m x 1m sample blind which will be velcroed onto a metal headrail.

    This class is suitable for anyone with basic hand sewing and sewing machine skills. If you are unsure whether you have these skills, why not sign up to our introductory class “How to get the best from your sewing machine”.

    All our classes at Pretty Sitting are designed to give students professional standard teaching in small groups. So, places are always limited, but we run a programme of classes throughout the year, and hopefully you can find dates that suit.
    Please bring a packed lunch with you. We have a small kitchen/dining facility within the workshop where you can use a fridge, microwave and kettle. Alternatively, there are a number of food shops and eateries locally in the Gorge or in the village centre.

    How to Sew a French Mattress Cushion

    French mattress cushions are a stylish way of creating a bench seat cushion or base for a day bed. They are made with a combination of machine stitching and hand stitching to create their distinctive crimped edges. They are fun to make and look fabulous!

    The aim of this two-day class is to create a mattress cushion from scratch. You can choose the size of your finished cushion up to a pad size of 60cm x 60cm. We can provide all materials to make your cushion.

    This class is suitable for anyone who is able to use a sewing machine and hand stitch. If you are unsure whether you have these skills, why not sign up to our introductory class “How to get the best from your sewing machine”.

    Chair Upholstery Weekend Workshop

    Our classes are suitable for the complete beginner as well as improvers. Students work on their own projects and are expected to bring a piece of furniture to work on. We can advise on the suitability of individual projects, and full details of what to expect and what is included will be sent out on booking or request. The types of projects suitable for the complete beginner would be a footstool/piano stool, dining chair, armless or fireside chair. They can be modern or antique, depending upon what you’d like to have a go at. We teach both modern and traditional upholstery techniques. Please remember that the more complicated a project, the more time will be needed to complete a piece.

    Beginner’s Soapmaking Workshop

    A comprehensive and fun day out, learning the skill of Soap making.
    Learn to make traditional cold process soap from scratch using natural ingredients.
    In the morning, there will be detailed information about the soap making process, ingredients, equipment and method, followed by a demonstration of the soap making process.
    In the afternoon, each person will get to make their own 2 different batches of soap to take home (approx 10-12 bars/1.2kg of soap in total) plus a detailed worksheet with recipes to continue making your own soap at home.

    Recipes are all palm free and suitable for vegans. Over 16s only.

    Please bring a some old towels to wrap your soaps in and a large carrier bag to take them home in can be useful.

    Introduction to Leather Work

    Two day Introduction to Leather Craft

    As seen on Ch 4’s “I Made This” and BBC’s “Countryfile”.

    Workshops sell out fast, so please book early.

    This course will introduce students to the basic skills used in leather work. Students with little or no experience will be taught basic skills by making two small items in leather. The projects will cover skills such as cutting and stitching leather.

    The course is designed to equip you with the basic skills necessary for you to continue developing the craft of leather work. The course will be taught using a hands-on approach with advice and guidance throughout using a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions and one-to-one, hands on guidance. You will be guided through the techniques used in making two simple projects, a belt and a small leather pouch that will be yours to keep.

    Students will gain the following skills:
    – Learn about different types of leathers and what uses they can be put to.
    – Learn how to cut simple patterns.
    – Learn about the basic hand tools used in leather work and what jobs they are used for (e.g. Setting rivets and press studs, hole punching, edge finishing, strap cutting.)
    – Learn how to fit a buckle.
    – Learn to hand stitch leather with linen thread and 2 needles.
    – Learn how to personalise or pattern leather by stamping.
    – Learn simple techniques used in leather work.
