Botanical Printmaking with Elisabeth Viguie-Culshaw
Join us for a fantastic botanical eco printing workshop with Elisabeth Viguie-Culshaw from The Lansdowne House. Botanical Printing is the natural technique of using floral and foliage elements to create colourful marks on paper and fabric using heat and humidity. In this one day workshop, we will learn the basics of Botanical Printing, get accustomed with material, mordanting and printing, using easy to obtain Natural dyes. We’ll start the morning by learning how to prepare our materials as our first botanical bundles go in the dying pots, and we’ll make mirror image prints onto fabrics. After a break for lunch in the garden, we will start to use the dye pots from earlier to create beautiful prints on both paper and fabrics in beautiful shades of green and blue.

Join world-famous textile sculptor Johanna Flannigan, aka The Pale Rook, to explore the stories you know, the stories you hear, and the stories you want to tell. Work with a mix of traditional cloth doll making methods and free form textile sculpture, as well as incorporating found objects and natural materials to create a unique figurative sculpture. You will learn how to recognise emerging characters in your doll making, and how to use the inherent qualities of your materials to bring these characters to life.

Join us for a fantastic shaggy Rya weaving workshop with Stephanie Fradette, aka Le Petit Moose. Tapestry weaving has seen a great resurgence in interior designs of late, and Rya weaving is a great way to achieve a contemporary art piece for your home. Stephanie will teach you how to incorporate this specific knotting technique into an abstract landscape-inspired wall hanging. During the course of the day, we will begin by sketching your design then focus on maximising textures and finding our weaving rhythm whilst learning the fundamental techniques of warping your loom, knot variations and finishing techniques. This class is ideal for beginners, as no prior weaving experience is needed.

Landscape Painting in Oils
This two-day, in the studio and ‘En Plein Air’ (weather depending) landscape painting course will give students the opportunity to learn a method of using oil paints that looks more like watercolour in the initial stages.
You will be asked to bring in sketches and photos of a favourite scene and work from these with hopefully the chance of giving the method a go outside in beautiful Cromarty on the second day. There will be demonstrations in the use of oil paints and plenty of one-to-one guidance from tutor Anna Wimbledon.
Participants will be sent a materials list in advance. Suitable for all abilities. Accommodation can be provided.

Using the same techniques and materials as the scribes that made the Book of Kells this workshop will involve working on real parchment and mixing traditional pigments to create a work of art inspired by the original insular manuscripts with the help of scribe, illuminator and parchment maker, Thomas Keyes.
This course will involve getting as close to the world of the insular scribe as it’s possible to get and in so doing gain a deeper appreciation of Celtic insular art.
