Introduction to Lettering & Engraving – Stone Carving Skills

Taught by a monumental mason with years of experience, this practical course introduces the principles of setting out lettering by hand and cutting inscriptions into stone.
This is a three-hour introductory workshop into the art of lettering and engraving, where you will be able to engrave a letter, number or an organic shape on Portland stone.
During the session you will learn how to lay out lettering, how to hold and use the tools correctly to make controlled incisions into the stone where a level of concentration and coordination is required. Suitable designs and templates will be provided, although you are most welcome to bring your own ideas and designs to discuss with the tutor.
Courses are held in our purpose built centre at Langton Matravers near Swanage, in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Area is part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that reaches east to Exmouth, Devon and west to nearby Swanage.

2 Day Relief Stone Carving – Inspired By Nature

Spend two days creating a beautiful relief stone carving using plants and nature as inspiration. This course will develop your creativity as well as your craft skills to produce a flowing, organic design with overlapping layers.
Bring your own design or work from our reference patterns and templates. You can expect a good balance of theory and practical skills, all in a creative and supportive atmosphere with a master craftsman.
This is a practical, hands-on class where you will build your skills in the craft of stone carving over two full days and create an expressive design in our local Purbeck stone.
You’ll use hand tools to carve a multi-layered relief with overlapping shapes, patterns and textures. Topics will include designing a relief, using a flat chisel to set out your design, creating the illusion of depth, making textures with a claw chisel and using a riffler to smooth your design and add detail.
You are welcome to bring along nature images or design sketches for a tablet of stone 20 x 20cm or 30 x 20cm. Your tutor will discuss the suitability of these and help you to ensure they are practical for carving. Patterns and design inspirations will be available for anyone who needs an idea. Stone carving is easiest done standing up, but a stool can be provided for anyone who would find this tiring.
Your sense of well-being, achievement and mindfulness is enhanced by the stunning location of our purpose-built centre in the heart of Purbeck in Dorset where Purbeck stone has shaped the landscape, the geology, the history and economy of the area.

    Introduction To Stone Carving

A one-day course (10am to 4pm) teaching the skills involved in stone carving.
This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience who wish to continue practising their skills in a supportive environment with a tutor on-hand for guidance.
You will learn the techniques of carving a relief onto stone, removing the unwanted background material. You will learn how to use the tools used in stone carving, providing a basic understanding of this heritage skill. During the day you will create a relief carving on a 20 x 20cm (8 x 8 inch) Portland stone tablet.
You do not need any particular skills, simply the ability to hold tools in both hands- a chisel in one, and a dummy (stonemason’s hammer) in the other. Stone carving is easiest done standing up, but a stool can be provided for anyone who would find this tiring.
This is a tutor-led, practical, hands-on class, with a supportive atmosphere. It’s also great fun with a rewarding conclusion as you get to take your own relief carving away with you. All work is completed in our purpose-built on-site workshops; our summer workshop is open to the beautiful view, our winter workshop has a cosy wood burning stove.
