    This intensive course will take you from crafter to qualified Craft Tutor in one 2-week immersive course. You will explore, develop and fine-tune your chosen craft specialism(s) with practical advanced skills workshops. There will be interactive sessions to develop your understanding of how people learn, and have time to practice delivering sessions for yourself. At the end of the 2-week course, you will have completed the syllabus for the Level 3 Award in Education & Training (through Qual Safe). You can either work on the assignments throughout the course to complete it within the 2 weeks, or take more time after the course and submit them when you are ready.     Box Cushion Workshop

    We provide expert tuition in a relaxed and spacious environment. Class sizes are kept small (maximum 3 people per session) allowing for plenty of one-to-one support to guide you through your project.

    You will be guided through the process from measuring and cutting your pieces, accounting for your chosen fabric type; pattern matching; sewing and attaching a zip panel; making and attaching piping; through to the final sewing together of all the elements.

    You will be introduced to the correct use of an industrial sewing machine and will be tutored through the various techniques, from start to finish.

    The class is suitable for all levels of experience however, beginners to sewing are advised to start with a small and square cushion with no shapes, lugs or tapers.

    You will need to bring the box cushion inner with you. If the cushion has an existing cover, then this should be brought along also.

    Cushion Masterclass

    In this one day workshop, you will learn how to make a professional piped scatter cushion, complete with a zip.

    Learn the techniques and skills required to construct a scatter cushion to a professional standard, including how to accurately measure and cut your fabric, make piping using bias cut strips and piping cord, and how to insert a zip. You will be shown how to master those tricky corners and joins on the sewing machine.

    You will then have the opportunity to put your new skills into practice and make a further cushion. Alternatively, there is the option to try your hand at making a bolster cushion during the afternoon.

    The class is suitable for all levels of experience, however, some basic machine experience is preferable. Class sizes are kept small, allowing for plenty of one-to-one support to guide you through these projects.

    Cushion inners will be provided (18″ or 20″ square feather pads and/or bolster inner) for your cushions and all other materials, excluding fabric, are included in the price.

    Fabric is available to purchase from our on-site shop on the day.

    Come and spend a day in a beautifully renovated 17th century chapel in Cornwall. You will learn to make a beautiful French mattress cushion. You will love these cushions, they’re so stylish and after this 1 day course you’ll be make them yourself.
    Our resident dog, Toby, is on hand for cuddles and support, he’s rubbish at upholstery but he makes us all laugh lots. The course is open to all levels so whether you’re a complete beginner with no sewing or upholstery experience or a professional maker just wanting to learn something new, we have you covered. You’ll go home with a beautiful French mattress cushion, some new skills and some new friends.

    Free Machine Embroidery with Sarah Sewell

    Free-machine embroidery has been described by Kirsty Allsopp as ‘the crack cocaine of the crafting world!’ and I have to agree – it is VERY addictive!
    Sarah’s workshop will introduce you to this fascinating art form – it can be described as drawing with your sewing machine.
    You will learn how to set up a sewing machine ready for free-machine embroidery, and can have fun practising doodling and ‘writing’ onto fabric. Once you have mastered the basics, you will design and create your own framed textile picture using free-machine embroidery & appliqué techniques.
    There will be a selection of fabrics available for you to use in your appliqué design, but you are very welcome to bring your own fabric if you prefer.
    At the end of the workshop, you will be able to set up a sewing machine for free-machine embroidery and have the knowledge to create your own textile art at home.
    Information regarding suitable fabrics and threads etc and where to buy them will also be given to you.

    How to Sew a Roman Blind

    HOW TO SEW A ROMAN BLIND

    Roman blinds are a great way of dressing a window, giving a simple, unfussy look. Whether you choose a patterned or plain fabric, you can make a feature of your windows without the expense of curtains.

    The aim of this class is to demonstrate all the techniques and stitches required to make a lined and interlined roman blind using your sewing machine and also sewing by hand to create a professional looking finish. You will create a 1m x 1m sample blind which will be velcroed onto a metal headrail.

    This class is suitable for anyone with basic hand sewing and sewing machine skills. If you are unsure whether you have these skills, why not sign up to our introductory class “How to get the best from your sewing machine”.

    All our classes at Pretty Sitting are designed to give students professional standard teaching in small groups. So, places are always limited, but we run a programme of classes throughout the year, and hopefully you can find dates that suit.
    Please bring a packed lunch with you. We have a small kitchen/dining facility within the workshop where you can use a fridge, microwave and kettle. Alternatively, there are a number of food shops and eateries locally in the Gorge or in the village centre.

    How to Sew a French Mattress Cushion

    French mattress cushions are a stylish way of creating a bench seat cushion or base for a day bed. They are made with a combination of machine stitching and hand stitching to create their distinctive crimped edges. They are fun to make and look fabulous!

    The aim of this two-day class is to create a mattress cushion from scratch. You can choose the size of your finished cushion up to a pad size of 60cm x 60cm. We can provide all materials to make your cushion.

    This class is suitable for anyone who is able to use a sewing machine and hand stitch. If you are unsure whether you have these skills, why not sign up to our introductory class “How to get the best from your sewing machine”.

    Roman Blind and Piped Cushion Workshop

    If you’ve ever wanted to make your own home furnishings then this is a great place to start. In this 1 day workshop you will make a sample size Roman blind and a Piped cushion!! You will leave with your makes and full instructions as a reference for when you make lots more at home.

    In this workshop we will discuss how to measure and calculate your blind size and fabric requirements.
    You will be shown two ways which can be used to attach your blind to your window and how the mechanism works for you to wind the blind up and down.
    You will then cut out and make a small, machine sewn, lined sample blind to a professional standard.
    You will have your sample blind to keep, hardware will not be provided, (if you wish to have a track and rods to take home there will be an extra £19 charge, all other materials are included – please let me know in advance as they have to be ordered).
    Basic sewing skills required, you need to know how to thread a machine and sew a straight line.

    Get To Know Your Sewing Machine

    Learn to use your sewing machine.

    This is the perfect sewing course for you if you are a complete beginner wishing to have a thorough introduction to using a sewing machine, learning different sewing techniques. This course consists of three two-hour sessions or a 6 hours day course, in which you will be taken from the very basics of setting up and threading a sewing machine to making a tote bag or storage basket, to a wash bag complete with zip and a cushion cover with buttons.

    You can bring your sewing machine with you, or use one of ours.

    You can use our materials for the first two projects, but I would suggest you provide your own material and buttons for the cushion to match your decor.
