    Pop-Up Paper Theatres

Learn how to design and make your own paper theatre, with wrap around storage box, in this fantastic weekend workshop. Paper toy theatres were very popular in the 19th century. The format you will make during the course is the tunnel book – a series of cut-paper panels placed one behind the other, creating the illusion of depth and perspective. This is engineered like an accordion, which can pull apart so that the illustrated panels line up to be viewed through a front panel. You will learn how to design your own scene, how to cut and assemble the layers, to create a portable paper sculpture.

    Decorative Bookbinding Workshop

Learn the basics of decorative bookbinding in a fun afternoon at The Smallprint Co!

Join us for a two – three hour workshop in which you will learn the ancient craft of Japanese stab binding, Coptic Stitch Binding or Long Stitch Binding.

In the Japanese Bookbinding Workshop you will experiment with simple binding techniques to create an A5 journal, sketchbook, scrapbook or album.

    On the Day
Hannah will teach a small group (up to 4 per session) the basics of a simple bookbinding technique – known as Japanese, Stab or Four Eye Binding – and how to make a hardcover for your project.

After choosing a cover paper from our selection of beautiful handmade papers, you will learn how to construct an A5, hard backed book, using the stab binding sewing technique to bind the pages and covers together.

Your decorative book will make the perfect journal or sketchbook, holding treasured photos or written memories.

At the end of the session you will be able to take away the skills and book that you have made.

Suitable for children also, 12 years upwards.

The session is ideal for anyone looking for a relaxing and crafty afternoon with friends and family.

    Coptic Book Binding

Learn how to make a fabulous and funky, A5 size, recycled rubber covered journal or sketchbook using one of the oldest types of bookbinding stitches – the coptic stitch.

This style of stitch allows you to construct a book which opens out completely flat and is great for sketching and writing in and when it is closed you see the linen stitch on the spine.

The durable rubber cover makes a practical sketchbook, personalised with your own contrasting linen stitch (colour choices will be given before the workshop as materials are sourced). All tools are provided for use on the day and materials are included to make one A5 book to take home and treasure. There is the option on the day to purchase tools to take home and continue crafting!
